Professor R.M.M.A. Nuijts is an expert in cornea, cataract and refractive surgery. He is the author or co-author of over 180 scientific publications and serves as the co-supervisor of 10 PhD candidates. As Professor of Cornea and Refractive Surgery his research team focuses on developing new treatment methods for cataracts, corneal transplants and refractive surgery.
Besides his clinical and research work, Professor Nuijts plays a pivotal role in various professional organisations, including the Nederlandse IntraOculaire Implant Club (NIOIC) and the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS). His dedication to the field and his contributions to advancing ophthalmology have made him a highly requested speaker at international conferences, with his work being globally recognised and respected. In 2018 he received the prestigious Ridley Medal, awarded biennially to ophthalmologists who have made exceptional contributions to cataract surgery worldwide. In 2020, he was appointed President of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS).
Professor R.M.M.A. Nuijts received his medical degree in Maastricht in 1986, after which he worked as a research fellow in Wisconsin and Atlanta in 1989. He then completed his ophthalmology training in Utrecht and Amsterdam in 1993, followed by a subspecialisation in Cornea in Rotterdam in 1994. Since then he has been working at Maastricht UMC. In 2013, he was appointed as Professor of Cornea and Refractive Surgery.
